Housing for the Urban Poor
From Local Action to Global Networks

May 15, 2013, Talk and discussion with urban development experts from Africa

A talk and discussion with a group of planners, architects, academics and journalists from African countries about the first findings of the research project was organized at Habitat Unit. Of particular interest was the relevance of urban poor networks for policy change, challenges arising from democratic deficits experienced with powerful actors within such networks, the controversy between so-called “pragmatic” and right-based movements in the housing field as well as what a transformed housing system could look like. The discussion table was part of an information visit under the topic of “urban development and planning in Africa and Germany” at the invitation of the German Federal Foreign Office.
